Global environmental changes require the active involvement of governments, industry, business, academia, environmental groups and the civil society. The Centre is bringing the knowledge and experience of these different stakeholders together to find concrete, workable and lasting solutions to environmental challenges.
The Centre is pursuing an approach that integrates specific work experience with science, economics, technology and innovations. One of the objectives of such an approach is to explore ways and means to accompany or reinforce environmental and other policy measures.
The Centre has undertaken consultations on the possibility to develop a certification scheme for port reception facilities that would be qualified to collect oily residues and cargo residues generated on board ships adequately and efficiently. This consultation is part of an approach to develop a level-playing field at the regional and global level to collect and manage residues, waste or garbage in an environmentally sound manner. It includes consideration of the development of international standards and an improvement of the traceability in the flow of waste.
